How To Make Your Own CBD Suppositories

Let’s dig into the what and why before we get into the how.

The world of CBD products is vast, with a multitude of delivery methods available to consumers. While most people are familiar with CBD oils, capsules, and topicals, there’s one method that’s gaining attention for its unique advantages: CBD suppositories. Although they might not be the most common way to consume CBD, suppositories offer several benefits that make them worth considering. In this blog, we’ll explore what CBD suppositories are, how they work, the potential advantages they can bring to your wellness routine AND share our recipe so you can make them at home!

What Are CBD Suppositories?

CBD suppositories are small, bullet-shaped capsules that are designed to be inserted into the rectum or vagina. They contain a combination of CBD extract and a carrier oil (usually coconut oil or cocoa butter) that melts at body temperature. Once inserted, the suppository dissolves, allowing the CBD to be absorbed through the mucous membranes.

How Do CBD Suppositories Work?

The rectum and vagina are rich in blood vessels and capillaries, making them highly efficient at absorbing substances into the bloodstream. When you insert a CBD suppository, it bypasses the digestive system and liver, which can break down and filter out some of the CBD. This means that a higher percentage of the CBD reaches your bloodstream, leading to quicker and more potent effects.

Below are just a few reasons why people use CBD suppositories:

  1. Efficient Absorption – CBD suppositories offer a unique advantage in terms of absorption. When inserted rectally or vaginally, they bypass the digestive system and the liver, allowing for quicker absorption into the bloodstream. This might result in faster onset of potential effects compared to oral consumption.
  2. Long Lasting Effects – CBD suppositories may provide sustained effects compared to some other methods of consumption. Due to their slower release, users may experience prolonged relief from discomfort or other potential benefits.
  3. Localized Relief – While not exclusive to suppositories, localized relief is a potential advantage. Depending on the placement of the suppository, users may experience targeted effects. For instance, vaginal suppositories could potentially offer relief from menstrual discomfort AND minimize pain/increase pleasure during sex.

Make Your Own CBD Suppositories!

The problem with natural CBD suppositories that you find on the market is that they are overly melty. You have to keep them in the refrigerator and they start melting in your fingers. That is because most of the natural suppositories on the market use coconut oil which changes from a solid to a liquid at 76 degrees Fahrenheit.

Our lab set out to work on solving that problem and we are sharing the recipe with anyone who wants to make their own hemp CBD suppository.

CBD Isolate Suppository Recipe 600 mg

(Makes 12 standard suppositories, approximately 1.75 grams each)

What you’ll need:

Directions

  1. Gently melt cocoa butter and stearic acid.
  2. Add CBD isolate. If it does not all dissolve gently, heat the product until it all melts. The melting point of cocoa butter should be high enough that you don’t need to add more heat to dissolve the CBD isolate.
  3. Pour into either reusable or single use molds.
  4. Allow to thoroughly cool.
  5. Store in a cool dark place. CBD is sensitive to light and heat.
  6. Use as needed.

Easy-peasy! You have your very own DIY suppositories.
